What we are talking about after the Phillies' 3-1 loss in Game 2 of the World Series:
* The tie: With a chance to open the World Series with two wins on the road and take a commanding lead going back to Citizens Bank Park tomorrow night, the Phillies instead lost to the Yankees, 3-1. The matchup for Game 3: LHP Andy Pettitte for New York against LHP Cole Hamels for the Phillies.
* The hook: Was Phillies manager Charlie Manuel asleep at the switch when he allowed Pedro Martinez to go back out to start the seventh inning, trailing 2-1? The 37-year-old righthander had pitched well, holding the Yankees to two runs on four hits. He also had 99 pitches at the time. The bottom line was that the first two batters he faced in the seventh singled, Chan Ho Park came out of the bullpen and the Yankees added an insurance run.
* A.J. Burnett: The question at the start of the night was which Burnett would show up. The one with the almost unhittable stuff or the one whose curve flattens out and lacks command of his fastball? The answer came early. With two strikes on Shane Victorino in the first, Burnett threw a 95-mph fastball that started toward the Phillies centerfielder's kneecap. As he jumped back, the ball tailed back and caught the inside corner of the plate for a perfect called strike three. No surprise, then, that he went on to hold the Phillies to one run on four hits in seven innings.
* Controversial call I: A potential big Yankees rally in the seventh was cut short when first-base umpire Brian Gorman ruled that Ryan Howard caught Johnny Damon's line drive before it hit the ground. Jorge Posada was then doubled off first to end the inning. The television replay wasn't totally conclusive, but from one angle it appeared that Howard may have caught the ball on the shortest of hops. Manager Joe Girardi certainly thought so, coming out to argue loudly.
* Controversial call II: In the top of the eighth, the Phillies started to mount a comeback against Yankees closer Mariano Rivera. But with runners on first and second and one out, Chase Utley grounded into a doubleplay. Except that replays seemed to suggest that Utley beat the relay throw. A tough night for Gorman, but none of the Phillies complained at the time.
